Bojnice Castle - The Most Spectacular Castle in Slovakia The  (13)The castle has undergone many changes over the centuries. Originally the fortress was built to be a wooden fort and grew out of the older fortress, then stone gradually replaced the wood, starting with its outer walls which took shape to be an uneven rocky terrain. It is built on a travertine hill and first recorded on the site in 1113 in the writ of Zobor Abbey. Matus Cak Trenciansky was Bojnice castle’s first owner who had captured it from the King Ladislaus V of Hungary in the years 1302 before passing to other aristocratic owners between the following noble families: Gileth, Leustach , Noffry and Thurzos. The Thurzo family were gifted it by King Ferdinand I in 1527 and renovated the fortress from a Gothic into a renaissance seat to be more comfortable. In its present form it is more similar to a French chateaux or Bavaria’s Neuschwanstein than to other Slovak fortresses.
Currently The chateau hosts a museum of art and history since 1950. The exhibition contains the original furniture from the early modern period through to the late 19th century., various artifacts and paintings like the late gothic collection Bojnice Altar by a master of Florence from 14th century and many other mysterious and hidden secrets. The chapel features a 14th century Florentine altar, and Count Jan Palfi is buried in a chapel in the rock below the castle.
Beneath the courtyard is a stalactite cave that contains the castle’s water source a 26-meter deep castle well.The grounds around Bojnice Castle include a moat with swans and a 600-year-old tree. The castle is renowned for its attractions, including the popular Castle Fairytale, the annual International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits which is held by the end of April and beginning of May and the Summer Music Festival.
