At the heart of Tenochtitlan was the Sacred Precinct, the religious and ceremonial center not just of the city, but of the empire as well. The main temple of the Aztecs was only part of a much larger sacred center of the great city of Tenochtitlan, where religious ceremonies and human sacrifices occurred( the great city of Tenochtitlan contained as many as 78 buildings).

The temple went through several phases of construction, each covering over previous layers in order to make the building bigger, that can withstand the earthquakes that are common in the area. These would have stairs up one side, and a flat top, often with a shrine on the top. Beside the main temple ,There are many Aztec temples that are known for their architecture magnificence. Later Spanish churches replaced many of the Aztec temples, when Mexico was conquered by Spain in the 16th century.now the only runnys are what we can see on the site.
