Legends say that Schwerin Castle is haunted by a pint-sized ghost named Peter or as he’s called in German Petermännchen. Petermännchen is a friendly night spirit who was allegedly a goblin which worked as a blacksmith in one of the many tunnels dressed in 17th century clothes and carries on his “person” many sets of keys. This ghost wanders through the underground tunnels that connected the castle with nearby Petersberg,( a local hill close to the town of Pinnow.), unlocking doors, haunting the vaults and cellars of the castle and protecting it against any intruders in its own magical way.

For centuries it was the home of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg and later Mecklenburg-Schwerin and today it serves the purpose of state parliament. First reports of a castle on the location for many strategic advantages inside Schwerin were made in 973 for the original Slav stronghold that has later been destroyed. It was not before the 16th century when the construction finally took place and was completed in 1857. Additional fortifications, bastions and transformations took place which is still standing today.
