Maui Hawaii Best Island In The World

Your Maui is located right in the middle of the inhabited part of the Hawaiian island chain, Hawaiian Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, a string of 132 islands, reefs and shoals going northwest to southeast and spanning over 1,500 miles (2,400 km), with five nearby islands in plain sight. First discovered by Polynesian voyagers around the year 450 A.D. Hawaii has the fourth longest coastline of any state in the US, and fully one-quarter of our reef fish exist nowhere else on Earth.

The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands with a land area of 729 square miles,48 miles long and 26 miles across. After Oahu, Maui is also Hawaii’s second most-visited island in the state. Maui is made up of two dormant volcanoes that overlapped one another to form a fertile valley or isthmus between them. The older volcano, Mauna Kahalawai is much older and has been eroded considerably. The larger Volcano called Haleakala (House of the Sun) rises to 10,023 feet (3,050 m). Both volcanoes are shield volcanoes and the low viscosity of the Hawaiian lava makes the likelihood of large explosive eruptions negligible.

Maui is also called the Turtle Town known for its high population of Hawaiian green sea turtles. Turtles are all over the island. There are a few spots that turtles tend to concentrate in specifically. The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (scientific name: Chelonia mydas) are actually named after the color of their body fat. The body fat is actually green. Maui is a leading whale-watching center in the Hawaiian Islands due to the breeding ground for the Humpback Whale, who winters here in the sheltered ʻAuʻau Channel between the islands of Maui county before returning to Alaska. The whales migrate approximately 3,500 miles (5,600 km) from Alaskan waters each autumn and spend the winter months mating and birthing in the warm waters off Maui. Maui’s beaches are legend, have been the Best Island in The World lauded on top 10 lists for years.
