Columbus Day is celebrated in the USA on the second week of October (Monday) in the honor of his exploration when he sailed the ocean blue, proving to the world that the world was not flat and here America was discovered in 1492. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer ‘ had his trip from Spain to Hispaniola, North America, travelling with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Sant Maria by the command of the King of Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. Columbus’ crew sailed in the Atlantic Ocean looking for a faster route to the Far East (Asia) in order to trade for valuable spices. Columbus, however, believed he had reached Asia but in fact he landed in the indies (the Caribbean Islands ) till his death in 1506 he believed that he had found a faster route to the far east Asia and not to the New World after sailing for five weeks (on October 12, 1492). Columbus’ ships and crew both made it back to Spain except The ship Santa Maria sank in Hispaniola. This simple Columbus Day coloring pages focuses on the three ships in the ocean and are a great preschool craft, kindergarten and elementary school children.
