Before the Ngorongoro volcano exploded, collapsing 2 million years ago, it was one of the tallest mountains in the world. The crater is said to have the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area have about 30,000 different animals, including the rare black rhino (More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater). Which are all protected by the steep walls that ring the crater, sheltering the area’s grasslands, a big soda lake, fresh springs, and forests? Ngorongoro Crater is the permanent home of these animals with ideal game viewing opportunities all year round and Unlike the Serengeti Plain to the west, where more than two million animals must migrate when the wet season is over, the Ngorongoro is blessed with an almost continuous supply of water. This natural irrigation maintains the habitat through the year. Two rivers, the Munge and the Lonyokie, supply the crater with water. They feed swamps along their course and eventually flow into the soda lake. (This lake lies at the lowest point of the crater but has no outlet.)
